Known as the Scottish Cringe, this in-built censor manifests in all sorts of ways, often near words like 'twee' and 'parochial'. Worse, Scots was actively discouraged – sometimes to the point of corporal punishment. This has led to generations of Scottish people believing they were speaking wrongly. Further, it meant that the names we call our places wouldn't be the ones we see on signs and maps.
