The root of the name derives from Brythonic, the language used by Celtic tribes living there from around the 1st century AD. They called it Din Eidyn – the Hillfort of Eidyn – where Eidyn was the region's name. With the arrival of the Angles, Scots language developed in the region and Din came 'burh' (fort). Around the 14th century, the name Edinburgh became more or less settled, although consistent spelling came later.

The artwork

This inky typographic design combines translations of 'Edinburgh'.
